  • Sydney Airport launches five-year investment program to transform its car park experience as it prepares to reach the 2 billion passenger milestone by 2040
  • Licence plate recognition, a new real-time parking guidance system and upgrades to entry and exit points will deliver a faster, more seamless experience for passengers
  • Introduction of ticketless parking will reduce paper waste by nearly 5.5 million tickets annually

Sydney Airport has launched a five-year investment program across its car parks, in a move that will transform the experience and improve efficiency for passengers.

The airport will invest $20 million in phase one of the works which will see all car parks at the Domestic and International precincts, including Blu Emu, upgraded to feature licence plate recognition technology, new parking guidance systems, and new car parking displays.

New licence plate recognition technology will be deployed delivering faster entries and exits, while ticketless parking will reduce paper waste, removing the need to print more than 15,000 tickets and 5,000 receipts every day.

A new parking guidance system will guide passengers to a parking spot more easily with data delivered in real-time via 2,275 detection cameras and displayed across 195 parking wayfinding signs.

Further upgrades will be delivered at 63 entry and 53 exit points, as well as 116 individual lanes, while 63 message boards and 179 digital displays will also be enhanced.

Sydney Airport Group Executive Commercial Mark Zaouk said the improvements will cater to the strong forecast passenger growth in the years ahead and will deliver a better experience for all car park users.

“We’re on a strong trajectory in our forecast to reach a milestone 2 billion passengers by 2040, and our ground transport program plays a pivotal role in meeting this demand,” he said.

“This phase of the works will see every touchpoint within our car parks upgraded to deliver a more positive experience for passengers and is one of the most significant investments in the car park facilities undertaken in the last decade.

“Passengers will soon be able to navigate the parking levels easier, locate a spot faster, and the improvements will significantly cut down the recirculating of vehicles which benefits all drivers in the car park.

“Passengers who park with us regularly will also benefit from the improvements we’re making to our online systems, with the option to set up an account for immediate car park entry and exit without having to stop at a payment machine or roll the window down.

“We’re confident these changes will go a long way in enhancing the experience for passengers at Sydney Airport and we look forward to bringing them online and rolling them out.”

Designa Australia Managing Director Sheldon James, said “We’re very proud to be working with Sydney Airport to deliver this significant step change in the customer experience across its car park network.

“Our holistic approach means we’ve been able to tailor the parking management technology to the airport’s unique environment and high passenger volumes to ensure greater automation and a more seamless experience for customers."

Phase one of the improvements program will roll out later this year at both the International and Domestic precincts, with the new systems scheduled to be operational in all car parks by Q4 2025.
